Latest Kitchen Designing Rules in Plain Language

Follow this failsafe guide to get the best kitchen design results and a kitchen you will be proud of.

Streamline surfaces

Crooks and crannies attract dust and dirt, so do away with these wherever possible.  Go for smooth and seamless – benchtops should have few visible joins and cupboards should reach the ceiling or run flush with a bulkhead.

Integrate appliances

Hide appliances behind closed doors for a look that blends in with the living area.  Keeping appliances out of sight will also assist with the appearance of spaciousness in your kitchen as well as making it easier to clean.

Get a smart splashback

Splashbacks are an ideal way to show off some flair with colour or texture, and with the wide range of splashback styles available in today’s market, it has never been easier to make a statement with your splashback.

Flaunt benchtops

Natural textures like marble or granite work perfectly in modern kitchens, as does matt granite and stone composites.  Modern kitchen benchtops are all about chunky slabs with deep edges.

Opt for an island

A well designed kitchen island where the cook can face family and guests is essential for entertaining.  Add a benchtop overhang to give people a comfortable place to sit.

Choose the right layout

Regardless of style, budget or space, every kitchen should have the main work areas – fridge, sink and oven/cooktop placed in close proximity (no more than three metres apart) so you can move easily between them.

Maximise storage

Use drawers to maximise storage space and make it easy to access your kitchens darkest corners.  Extra deep drawers are perfect for pots and pans, while shallow, wide drawers are great for storing cutlery.

Clue up on colours

All-white, cream or pale grey colours are foolproof design classics which will create a calm atmosphere in your kitchen.  Dark tones can be used on the bottom row of cabinetry to create impact, and keep bursts of colour to smaller areas such as splashbacks or the front panel of island benches.
